[ Connor takes the forms and turns his back to Logan for a moment, mostly because I don't want to describe the boring process of, like, retrieving a fresh library card and all that.

When he returns he has said card in hand. Logan's name is printed on it in handwriting so perfect one could easily mistake it for computer type — perfect penmanship is one of the many perks of being an android. There's a blank line beneath Logan's printed name where he should sign. Connor indicates the spot on the card. ]

[ And assuming Logan does that, Connor then produces a list of books that may or may not ring a bell. ]

One more thing. Can you take a look at this list and tell me if any of these titles sound familiar?

[ You know that feeling when you've peed everything out and this full body shiver runs through you?

Yeah, that's what Logan feels when he sees the list.

Because boy, does he recognise what's on the page. Every title is familiar because he'd had them stashed in a hole in a tree until Henry took him back into the house.

And now they're stashed under his bed.

He can see the disappointed face of his mentor in his head. Logan sighs.

There's a $60 replacement fee for all lost books. You owe the library $900, which must be paid in full before you can borrow anything else.

[ There's a subtle, authoritative shift to his tone that definitely makes him sound more like he's in the interrogation room than the library. ]

If you return them, I'll reduce the fines to a $10 late fee per book. It's your choice.

[ And Logan reacts to authority as he always does-- bristling about it, standing tall with a disbelieving expression. ] Nine hundred dollars.

Yes.

[ Connor's unaffected by the bristling and general tallness going on. ]

Unless you return the books.

You know the reason I took 'em was 'cause no-one was handling the borrowing when I got here.

You don't have to borrow books to read them.

[ You could have easily read all 15 of these books in the actual library, come on. ]

Would you take what you wanted from a supermarket if you couldn't locate a store associate?

The supermarket ain't got a borrowing policy. [ Logan's taking the list of titles, however, and folding the paper before pocketing it. He's going to return them, of course...

Just. A little later than he probably should, out of pure stubbornness.

But it's fine. ]

Library does. It ain't on me if no-one's around to handle it.

[ He signs his card quickly. ]

Unfortunately it is. I can't let you borrow anything else until the fines are paid.

[ Connor's quite serious, too. Rules are rules. ]

[ There is the mildest, smallest irritation.

But Logan decides he doesn't want to cause any actual trouble, and settles for being satisfied with the fact that he at least doesn't need any new books for his classes in the future. ]

Fine. I'm piss broke now, [ a fact he emphasises with a pat of both hands over both his front pockets ] but later.

Yes.

[ Connor does his best approximation of a pleasant smile — he's really not that great at it unless it's genuine and he's not actively thinking "this is what smile look like" but he tries. ]
